A new advertising system is being put in place by Facebook which placed ads directly related to the content in the form of status updates and Wall Posts that are currently being shared by users. This new marketing strategy that aims to tailor ads according to the user’s interests as Facebook has joined up with internet companies that markets products or services based on the user’s online activity at that time.
For example, if you add a comment on the University of Connecticut Huskies men’s basketball team and the NCAA basketball tournament, you can be sure to find ads that are related to UConn athletic gear and a perhaps even a travel company endorsement from the University of Kentucky basketball team, the latter being rivals to the Huskies.
And if there was any doubt that this was being implemented, all doubts were laid to rest when a Facebook spokeswoman announced that this new system of real-time ads are currently being tested, and if it wasn’t clear why, it was also revealed that since most Facebook users are very explicit about their interests in the form of Wall posts and updates, this information can be used to show them ads of products that might be of interest to them.
However, this kind of technology is not new as it is currently being used by Microsoft, Google and Yahoo, and while it has not yet been revealed how long testing will take place or whether this will be available to all users, you can be sure that these ads will be useful to its users in the future.
